Bulgaria Overview

Bulgaria lies in the South Eastern corner of Europe.  It is bounded by Greece and Turkey to the South, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro to the West, Romania to the North and The Black Sea to the East (view maps).  The country is covered with a prominence of mountains, forests and rivers and the Black Sea resorts have some of the largest beaches in Europe whilst the mountain resorts enjoy long winter seasons receiving heavy falls of snow to provide almost guaranteed permanent ground cover.

The country is higly accessible from all corners of Europe with a flight time from the UK of just 2 - 3 hours (depending on your destination airport).  Flights will be into either Sofia or Plovdiv for those visiting mountain resorts and Varna or Burgas for summer resorts on the Black Sea coast.
Beautiful Scenery, Bulgaria

The natural beauty of Bulgaria is especially striking to first time visitors, and in particular it is the dominance of its magnificent mountains that really impresses travellers though the landscapes can change in the blink of an eye, ranging from rugged snow-covered peaks and icy blue lakes to cool forests, bio-reserves and varied flora and fauna.

Bulgaria has a number of national parks which abound in rare flora and fauna, bird species (including vultures, eagles and falcons), as well as endangered animal species such as bears, wolves and red deer. One of Bulgaria's national parks, The Pirin National Park is situated on the highest part of the Pirin mountain range.  The landscape varies from the ancient Baikusheva pine forests to crystalline lakes and limestone rocks.  Many rare plant species, such as the near extinct Edelweiss, are preserved within the park.

Nestled within the mountain ranges are ski resorts and mineral spas, quaint traditional villages, monasteries, and many opportunities for hiking, cave exploration and ecotourism.

The summer season in the mountains is pleasant and typically reaches temperatures in the mid 20's (celsius) with plentiful sunshine.  Many activities from walking and hiking to white water rafting, rock climbing and mountain biking can be enjoyed in addition to simply enjoying the stunning scenery.

The winter season is long and continues to enjoy much sunshine.  Snow falls are abundant providing a constant ground covering during the lengthy ski season that extends from December through to May in some resorts.
